Students raise funds for Samoa
On Friday 16th of October Year 12 VCAL students, with excellent help from a contingent of Year 7s raised $450 for the Pacific tsunami relief effort.

Despite rainy conditions, over two hundred kebabs were consumed on the College Green, along with over one hundred cans of drink and eighty bags of fairy floss (although some of these were prudently saved for later).

This event was the product of weeks of furious preparation on the part of VCAL students, demonstrat- ing, not for the first time, their ability to make decisions democratically and to organise themselves effectively (this was the same outfit who were in large part responsible for raising over a twelve hundred dollars for Foundation House during Refugee Week)....

A MEADOW Heights teenager has shared her story in the hope of improving human rights in her home country.

Nagma Ali, 17, emigrated from Somalia with her family in 1999. She wrote about the pain of seeing her beloved country in civil war for the Hume ‟N Writes Stories competition, which encourages people to share their visions for the future and ideas about human rights. Nagma said it was scary to think her father, who lived in Somalia, was in danger. Her uncle was killed in a car bombing. She wrote of the difficulty of never knowing if she would see her father again.

“My dream is that perhaps one day my father will be able to see the country that he fought for such a long time at peace,” she wrote. The year 12 Roxburgh College student said she was inspired to share her story in the hope that the civil war would stop. Banksia Gardens Community Centre officer Joanna Nevill said other entries included poetry, paintings and a film about Aborigines in Broadmeadows.

The recent Swine Influenza outbreak closed a small number of schools for several days, in Europe during the winter, sometimes schools close for weeks. A university study on the absenteeism and test performance, have found that, students who are absent from school for five or more days, were much more likely to not meet age appropriate learning targets. In brief, student time on task is important to learning.

Every day your child is out of school, for whatever reason, his or her learning achievement suffers. Just being in school, however, is only the starting point. Researchers have pointed out a difference between the amount of time schools allocate for learning, the amount of time during which students are engaged in learning, and actual learning time.

April Newsletter

Every year schools submit their total student enrolment to the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). The enrolment data is electroni-cally submitted on the last day of February; this is referred to as the February Census or the Start of Year Census. There is also a Mid-Year Census that collects information about the school community and in turn, DEECD determines how the school will be funded.

This is one of the reasons why we are so particular in wanting to obtain up to date information. This year we have a confirmed total enrolment of 1356. This makes us one of the largest secondary colleges in the North of Melbourne. Attached to size there are benefits including the large number of curriculum programs we are able to offer in Years 11 and 12.
