A MEADOW Heights teenager has shared her story in the hope of improving human rights in her home country.

Nagma Ali, 17, emigrated from Somalia with her family in 1999. She wrote about the pain of seeing her beloved country in civil war for the Hume ‟N Writes Stories competition, which encourages people to share their visions for the future and ideas about human rights. Nagma said it was scary to think her father, who lived in Somalia, was in danger. Her uncle was killed in a car bombing. She wrote of the difficulty of never knowing if she would see her father again.

“My dream is that perhaps one day my father will be able to see the country that he fought for such a long time at peace,” she wrote. The year 12 Roxburgh College student said she was inspired to share her story in the hope that the civil war would stop. Banksia Gardens Community Centre officer Joanna Nevill said other entries included poetry, paintings and a film about Aborigines in Broadmeadows.
